Storycraft: A Writing Workshop with Bird Cox

There’s the part of writing that’s exhilarating - spilling waves of language across the page, taking notation when brilliant little pockets of detail and richness suddenly burst forth in your mind, hearing a character’s voice for the first time - and that’s all very, very good. But there’s also the part of writing that is cruel heartbreaking Saturnian challenging. This workshop provides a platform for developing fresh fiction/screenplay material and getting supportive feedback, helping to bridge the gap between the inspired and the seemingly impossible. We’ll be exploring structure, technique, voice and other tools with which to craft.

Writers at all levels are welcome.

Location: BIG SECRET, 308 N. Adams St.

6 Wednesdays, March 27th-May 1st, 7-9pm

Writers’ Redoubt

Writers in all genres thrive on the ability to get deep – to develop a productive intimacy with the ideas that lurk in the recesses of the mind. This class will teach participants to gain access to those ideas using short, focused techniques like character study, automatic writing, thematic threading and more. Such tools not only bring vivid, lush detail to written work, they also help to alleviate writer’s block (and other lapses in focus, i.e. But-I-Haven’t-Caught-Up-On-Downton-Abbey-Yet Syndrome).

This class is open to writers at all stages and in all genres, whether starting a first short story or revising a third screenplay. Through prompted and free-writing sessions, exploration of structural techniques and workshopping, this class will get your best material onto the page; exercises can be used to generate fresh material or to develop previously written work.

Location: BIG SECRET, 308 N. Adams St.

Time/Dates: 4-6pm, Sundays, February 17-March 24

Cost: $125
